Stop Throwing So Many Dummies: Why Less Really Is More

One of the most common mistakes I see in gundog training is simply throwing too many retrieves.
It’s easy to understand why. Dogs love retrieving, handlers enjoy watching them work and it feels productive to keep throwing “just one more”. But if every training session consists of retrieve after retrieve, you may actually be creating the very problems you’re trying to avoid.
When it comes to retrieving, quality will always beat quantity.

Every Retrieve Should Have a Purpose
Before you throw a dummy, ask yourself one question:

What am I trying to teach?
If the answer is “I’m not sure,” then it’s probably not worth throwing.
Every retrieve should help your dog develop a particular skill, whether that’s marking, memory, steadiness, delivery, handling or confidence. Randomly throwing dummies simply because your dog enjoys it often results in excitement rather than learning.
A dog that has completed three excellent retrieves has usually gained far more than one that’s raced around collecting twenty.

Too Many Retrieves Can Create Problems
Over-retrieving often produces dogs that begin to anticipate.
They start creeping forward before being sent, breaking when another dog retrieves, vocalising with excitement or snatching at the dummy. Some become so focused on the retrieve that they switch off from the handler completely.
The retrieve itself becomes the reward, and patience disappears.
These behaviours aren’t because the dog is being difficult. More often than not, they’ve simply been taught that every thrown dummy is theirs to chase.

Marking Isn’t About Quantity
A common misconception is that dogs become better markers by seeing lots of dummies fall.
In reality, good marking is built through thoughtful, progressive training.
One well-planned mark that encourages the dog to concentrate, remember the fall and retrieve accurately is far more valuable than repeatedly throwing dummies into the same area.
Allow your dog time to think. Let them work out the retrieve rather than rushing in to help at the first sign of uncertainty. Building confidence comes from solving problems successfully, not from being given the answer every time.

Don’t Forget the Other Skills
A successful gundog is much more than a good retriever.
Some of the most valuable training sessions involve very little retrieving at all.
Spend time on:
Calm heelwork.
Steadiness around distractions.
Stop whistle responses.
Recall.
Hunting patterns.
Directional control.
Focus and engagement.
These foundations are what allow retrieves to be successful when it really matters.

Finish While They’re Wanting More
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to finish the session before your dog loses concentration.
If your dog has completed a few excellent retrieves, end on that success.
There’s no prize for squeezing in another five retrieves just because you have dummies left in your bag.
Leaving your dog wanting more keeps enthusiasm high and helps maintain quality in future sessions.

Train Smarter, Not Longer
The goal isn’t to tire your dog out.
The goal is to develop a calm, thoughtful and confident working partner that understands their job and enjoys doing it.
Sometimes that means doing fewer retrieves, giving your dog more time to think and making every exercise count.
The next time you head out with a bag full of dummies, challenge yourself to throw fewer.
You might be surprised how much more your dog learns.

Want to Improve Your Dog’s Marking?
Our Marking & Retrieving Workshop is designed to help dogs become more confident and independent markers while giving handlers the skills to develop accurate, reliable retrieves. Using carefully planned exercises, hand-held launchers and shot, we’ll focus on building confidence, concentration and better marking in a supportive training environment.
If you’d like to take your dog’s retrieving to the next level, we’d love to see you there.
