8 Week Picking Up & Peg Dog Course

Want to improve your dog’s work during the shooting season, or experience the exciting world of picking up and peg work?
Our 8 Week Picking Up & Peg Dog Course is designed to give you and your dog practical experience of working in a shooting environment, whilst developing the skills needed to become a reliable and effective picking up or peg dog.
This is a fabulous opportunity for those already working their dogs to polish up their training during the shooting season, as well as those looking for an introduction to this type of work.
It is also ideal for handlers currently taking part in our gundog training who would like to experience another side of working their dog and see how their existing training can be transferred into a shooting environment.
What will we cover?
Throughout the eight weeks, we will work on the skills and situations you are likely to encounter when working your dog on a shoot, including:
• Picking up and retrieving
• Peg work and marking
• Working around other dogs and handlers
• Hunting and searching for fallen game
• Steadiness around shot and movement
• Marking and memory retrieves
• Handling and directional work
• Working in different environments and terrain
• Developing confidence and reliability around game
• Practical shooting scenarios
Shotguns will be used throughout the course, giving dogs and handlers the opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and situations associated with real shooting work.
We will also use cold game throughout the course, helping dogs develop confidence and experience working with game rather than relying solely on dummies.
The course will be practical, progressive and enjoyable, with an emphasis on developing a dog that can work calmly, confidently and effectively in a real shooting environment.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for:
• Existing picking up and peg dogs who need some polishing and extra experience during the season.
• Dogs and handlers new to picking up or peg work who would like a structured introduction.
• Gundog handlers who already train with their dogs and want to experience another aspect of working their dog.
You don’t need to be an experienced picker-up to join us. We will work with you and your dog at your current level and help you progress throughout the eight weeks.
