September always feels like an important month for us.
The days are beginning to change, the mornings have that unmistakable autumn feel and, for many gundog owners, thoughts turn towards the shooting season ahead.
But here at Seadogs Training, we believe gundog training is about far more than preparing a dog for a day in the field.
It’s about building a partnership between you and your dog.
It’s about having a dog you can enjoy living with, whether you are out on a shoot, walking across the countryside, training in the garden or simply relaxing at home.
And that’s something we see every day at our gundog training centre in Suffolk.
Your dog doesn’t need to be a working gundog to benefit from gundog training
One of the biggest misconceptions we come across is that gundog training is only relevant if you intend to take your dog shooting.
It really isn’t.
Many of the dogs we work with are much-loved family pets.
Springers, Cockers, Labradors, Retrievers and other gundog breeds have been bred to work with people. They are intelligent, energetic and often have an incredible desire to use their noses, explore their environment and get involved.
That can be wonderful.
But without the right outlets and training, those natural instincts can sometimes become challenging.
Pulling on the lead.
Chasing.
Ignoring the recall.
Running around without really listening.
Picking things up and refusing to give them back.
Being unable to settle.
Or simply having a dog who seems to have a mind of its own!
This is where gundog training can make such a difference.
We aren’t trying to take the character out of your dog.
We want to help you understand it.
There is a huge difference between a dog that runs around and a dog that is actually hunting
We often talk to owners about the difference between activity and purposeful work.
A dog running around a field might look like it is having a fantastic time.
But is it actually using its nose?
Is it listening to you?
Can you influence where it goes?
Can you stop it?
Can you call it back?
Can you ask it to search an area?
Can you send it in a particular direction?
Can it work around distractions?
These are the skills that turn natural ability into something useful.
And they are just as valuable for the pet gundog as they are for the dog that will eventually work on a shoot.
Teaching your dog to hunt properly, for example, can give that busy brain something constructive to do. Teaching a reliable recall can give you more freedom when you’re out walking. Teaching steadiness can help prevent chasing.
Good gundog training isn’t about making every dog identical.
It’s about helping each dog become the best version of itself.
We train the handler as much as the dog
This is one of the biggest things we believe in at Seadogs Training.
You can teach a dog a sit, a recall, a retrieve or a stop whistle.
But if the handler doesn’t understand how, when and why to use those skills, the training won’t transfer into everyday life.
That’s why our approach is very much about training for you and your dog.
We want you to understand what you’re doing rather than simply following a list of exercises.
Because once you understand your dog, training becomes much easier.
You start recognising what motivates them.
You learn when to push forward and when to take a step back.
You learn how to manage situations before they become problems.
And, perhaps most importantly, you start to understand that less is often more.
You don’t always need a longer training session.
You don’t need to throw everything at your dog at once.
You need the right exercise, at the right time, for the right dog.
Real-world gundog training matters
We’re lucky to have a training environment here in Suffolk where we can work dogs in much more than an artificial paddock.
Our training includes woodland, water, open ground, retrieving lanes, jumps, ditches and specialist areas such as our rabbit pen.
That allows us to introduce dogs to different environments, distractions, surfaces, scents and challenges.
Because eventually, that’s what matters.
Not whether your dog can perform an exercise perfectly in one familiar location.
Can they still listen when the environment changes?
Can they concentrate when there are distractions?
Can they cope with scent?
Can they work around other dogs?
Can they respond to you when something exciting happens?
Those are the skills that make training useful in the real world.
And that’s why we created the Seadogs Training Academy
We know that not everyone can attend regular training sessions.
You might live too far away.
You might have a busy schedule.
You might want to revisit something you’ve already been taught.
Or perhaps you’re the sort of person who likes to learn at your own pace and then go out and practise with your dog.
That’s exactly why we created the Seadogs Training Academy.
The Academy gives you access to our training knowledge online, so you can learn, practise and come back to lessons whenever you need them.
It’s designed for gundog owners who want support rather than simply a collection of videos.
Whether you’re starting with a puppy, working through the basics with your young Springer, trying to improve your recall, developing your retrieving or simply wanting to understand your gundog better, the Academy gives you another way to train with us.
And because training doesn’t happen overnight, having that support available when you need it can be incredibly valuable.

September is a great time to start
Whether you have a working gundog, a future working prospect or simply a lively family Springer or Cocker, September is a great time to take a look at where you are with your training.
What is working well?
What needs a little more attention?
What would make life easier for you and your dog?
Perhaps your recall needs improving.
Perhaps your dog needs to learn to hunt rather than simply run.
Perhaps retrieving needs polishing.
Perhaps steadiness needs work.
Or perhaps you simply want to enjoy doing more with your dog.
You don’t have to wait until there is a problem.
Training is an ongoing process, and some of the most enjoyable parts come from watching your dog learn something new and seeing that partnership develop.
Training for you and your dog
That’s what Seadogs Training has always been about.
Rob and I have spent decades working and training dogs in real shooting environments, and we bring that experience into everything we do.
We work with the dog in front of us.
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
And we don’t believe that owning a gundog means you have to shoot.
We believe that understanding your dog’s natural instincts, giving them appropriate outlets and teaching them how to work with you can make life better for both of you.
Whether you’re looking for gundog training in Suffolk, Springer Spaniel training, pet gundog training or simply want to learn more about getting the best from your dog, we’d love to help.
You can train with us in person at our Suffolk training centre, through our courses and workshops, or from wherever you are through the Seadogs Training Academy.
Because ultimately, it’s not just about training a dog.
It’s about building a partnership you’ll enjoy for years to come.
